Education and Training

Dr. Marsh earned his medical degree at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, Arkansas, and served his residency in general surgery at the St. Paul Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. He held fellowships in renal transplantation surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and in liver transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Marsh joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as an assistant professor of surgery in 1986. In 1989, he became faculty of Washington University in St. Louis. He joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh again in 1993.

Clinical and Cognitive Interests

Dr. Marsh has performed more than 500 liver transplants, resections, and other hepato-pancreatico-biliary surgical procedures. His long-standing clinical interest in hepatic cancers resulted in his co-development of a neural network model to predict recurrence and time to recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after transplantation. This work will result in better utilization of donors, predictable outcomes after transplantation, and a better understanding of chemotherapy on this disease process.

Dr. Marsh has published 83 research papers and 8 book chapters. His current research initiatives reflect his clinical interest in improving outcomes after transplantation for patients with liver cancers as well as his expertise in computer technologies. He is currently involved in development of models to predict progression of hepatic cancers and is investigating automated decision trees in medicine. Dr. Marsh’s work is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
