Center for Audiology and Hearing Aids
The UPMC Center for Audiology and Hearing Aids performs routine and specialized hearing evaluations and provides treatment for permanent hearing loss, including hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive listening devices. The center has three specialized programs: the Tinnitus Treatment Program, focusing on patients with tinnitus (noise in the ears) and hyperacusis (hypersensitivity to sound); the Musicians' Hearing Center, which cares for the auditory needs of musicians; and the Cochlear Implant Program, which helps those who cannot use hearing aids. In addition, the center can create custom earmolds such as musicians' earplugs, swim plugs, in-ear monitors, and earplugs to block noise.
The goal of the audiologists at UPMC is to provide evidence-based care related to your hearing loss and communication challenges. This means collecting appropriate data regarding your hearing loss, communication needs, and lifestyle in order to provide you with an evidence-based solution that will match available technology to your hearing loss and lifestyle. This ensures the best possible individualized solution for each person. There is no one "best" solution when it comes to hearing aids, assistive devices, or hearing protection. The best solution is dependent on the individual's hearing status, communication needs, and lifestyle. It is essential that the audiologist measures and understands these aspects of the individual prior to making recommendations. Our audiologists use current research literature to ensure that they are recommending features that are supported by evidence to enhance hearing and listening. In addition, our clinic participates in a variety of research studies that allow us to test new technology so we can be sure to recommend technology that will work for you and not simply recommend the latest or most expensive technology.
