Physical Rehabilitation
The UPMC Institute for Rehabilitation and Research offers a wide network of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation facilities. The Institute is one of the leading rehabilitation programs in the country, offering innovative therapies, state-of-the art technology, and high-quality care.
The UPMC Institute for Rehabilitation and Research combines clinical services and research activities that benefit patients with brain injury, spinal cord injury, peripheral nerve disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, stroke, and other physical disabilities. A team of rehabilitation experts from various disciplines integrates all elements of rehab into each patient's daily activities.
Inpatient Rehabilitation
Inpatient rehabilitation is available at eight UPMC hospitals. These services provide patients with high-quality care and access to an on-site pharmacy, laboratory services, advanced radiology services, and an on-site emergency department. The hub of the Institute's acute care rehabilitation services is housed within UPMC South Side.
Outpatient Rehabilitation
Outpatient rehabilitation is available through the Centers for Rehab Services for those who do not need hospitalization or around-the-clock nursing. Centers for Rehab Services is the largest provider of physical and occupational therapy in western Pennsylvania. A UPMC partner and affiliated with the UPMC Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, it has more than 40 locations offering a range of services, including:
- aquatic therapy
- balance therapy
- de-weighted walking therapy
- hand therapy
- industrial therapy
- lymphedema treatment
- neurological therapy
- occupational therapy
- physicial therapy
- sports rehabilitation
- speech therapy
- temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) treatment
