SimpleDICOM

SimpleDICOM is a suite of vendor-independent software applications that address some of the peripheral tasks not historically included in commercial picture archiving and communication system (PACS) implementations.

SimpleDICOM, comprised of four component productivity tools, was developed by the Radiology Informatics Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh to fill gaps in the functionality of the institution’s first-generation PACS. The original four productivity tools in the suite were:

  1. SimpleDICOM Viewer displays DICOM images outside the PACS environment.
  2. SimpleDICOM Sender extracts images from outside CDs and sends them to the hospital PACS.
  3. SimpleDICOM Wrapper imports non-radiologic images into the PACS.
  4. SimpleDICOM Receiver de-identifies and stores DICOM objects.

While much of SimpleDICOM’s functionality has since been incorporated into modern PACS, the SimpleDICOM Viewer component remains available for free download.
