The future of medicine lies in the ability to bridge the gap between the development of new regenerative medicine technologies, devices, and reconstructive strategies and their clinical application in patients.
The UPMC Center for Innovation in Restorative Medicine (CIRM) is leading this effort by providing a restorative medicine model that accelerates the seamless transition of innovation to clinical implementation.
Created within the Division of Plastic Surgery at UPMC, CIRM works in partnership with the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine, as well as the University of Pittsburgh.
Restoration is the Goal
CIRM seeks to fully repair function and aesthetics caused by injury or disease. Current practices for addressing severe damage to the human body often offer only temporary solutions to the problem, while restoration serves to cure the problem.
By employing regenerative techniques based on cellular therapy and tissue engineering, our clinicians treat patients with the goal of fully repairing injury and damage, eliminating many of the complications that may occur using existing techniques and technologies.
CIRM is a comprehensive system of access, referral, evaluation, treatment, and long-term care. It enables patients to explore and access the most promising potential treatments for severe, complex or challenging injuries, especially where conventional options have been exhausted.
