Treatment of Benign Breast Deformities and Post-Segmental Mastectomy Breast Deformities with Autologous Fat Grafting (AFT)

Purpose

We will study the safety and effectiveness of fat grafting, taking fat from a patient’s abdomen and / or thighs and grafting it into the breast area to treat breast deformities in patients who have undergone surgery for resection of breast tissue to treat either benign or malignant breast disease.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate changes in the appearance of breast tissue appearance over time, the amount of fat retained, and quality of life status in subjects with breast deformities after having breast fat grafting, using the patient’s own fat to reshape the breast. We will also examine the cellular properties of the grafted fat in each patient for to evaluate and compare to clinical outcomes of surgery.

We will assess changes in breast appearance, graft retention and quality of life over one year in patients who have received outpatient breast fat grafting surgery for the treatment of objectionable post-surgical breast deformities.

Protocol Summary

We will evaluate women who have had prior breast surgery or who have a breast deformity, causing an unnatural appearance to the breast for participation in this study. Patients will undergo screening medical history, physical, medication evaluation, interview to assess current satisfaction with breast appearance, and photographing of breasts. Eligible patients will have outpatient breast fat grafting surgery in which fat is removed from the abdomen and / or thighs and placed into the breast area to reshape the breast.

Follow-up visits will be at 1-2 weeks after surgery, and again at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery to assess breast shape, retention of fat in the breast, satisfaction with the appearance of the breasts, and photography of the breasts.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Women between 18 and 70 years of age
  • 6 months post chemotherapy or radiation treatment
  • Scheduled for physician evaluation for a standard of care breast fat graft procedure
