Conditions We Treat

UPMC surgeons have particular expertise in the treatment of breast disease, including:

Breast cancer

  • invasive ductual carcinoma; invasive lobular carcinoma
  • ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
  • lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS)
  • Paget’s disease of the nipple
  • rare forms of breast cancer
  • breast cancer associated with pregnancy

Breast disease

  • fibrocystic disease
  • nipple discharge – especially bloody, dark, clear, and spontaneous
  • lumps
    • palpable
    • non-palpable
  • abnormal mammogram
    • calcifications that cannot be needle biopsied
    • high-risk lesion on needle biopsy or atypical biopsy cells
    • discordant pathology/imaging findings after biopsy
  • trauma, fat necrosis
  • masses
    • papilloma
    • fibroadenoma (increased size)
    • phyllodes
  • mastitis/abscess
