UPP Vascular Surgery Vein Center
At UPP Vascular Surgery we have physicians who treat problems of the venous system. Our UPP Vein Center has been operating as a specialty center for the last 10 years. Our mission is to maintain patients with good venous health. We take care of all venous conditions, from cosmetic treatment of spider veins to managing the most severe venous disorders, including congenital venous malformations, deep vein thrombosis, ulcers, severe varicose veins and swollen legs.
Our Services
UPP Vascular Surgery Vein Center is a full-service vein treatment clinic staffed by licensed and trained doctors experienced in treating vein disease. We specialize in treating all stages of varicose veins and spider veins. Our varicose vein treatment and spider vein treatment services include:
- Ambulatory phlebectomy
- Creation of dialysis fistulas and grafts
- Duplex ultrasound
- Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT®)
- Lysis of venous clot
- Sclerotherapy
- Stenting of venous occlusions or narrowings
- Surgery
The UPP Vein Center is a frequent trial site for a new treatments of varicose veins which do not involve surgery. Currently we have three trials looking at treatment and analysis of venous ulcers. Innovative treatments offered at the UPP Vein Center have shown great promise in healing venous ulcers, even some that have been present for many years. - Dr. Ghassan Abu-Hamad
- Dr. Rabih Chaer
Dr. Rabih Chaer is a board-certified vascular surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Chaer completed his surgical training at the University of Illinois in Chicago, and his vascular training at the New York Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia and Cornell. Dr. Chaer practices in the Shadyside office.
- Dr. Ellen Dillavou
Dr. Ellen Dillavou is a board-certified vascular surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Dillavou received her medical degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. She completed her postgraduate training at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, and the University of Pittsburgh. She practices at the Magee Women’s Hospital as well as in the Shadyside office. She has been awarded a Young Investigator's award from the American College of Phlebology and is currently is conducting research into the treatment of perforating veins and their role in leg pain and ulcers.

Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery
Dr. Stanley Hirsch is a board-certified vascular surgeon who has been practicing in the Pittsburgh area for more than 30 years. Dr. Hirsch received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his postgraduate training at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh and Boston City Hospital, Boston, MA. In addition to his busy clinical practice, Dr. Hirsch is a highly sought-after teacher and lecturer on the treatment of varicose veins.

- Dr. Robert Rhee
Dr. Robert Rhee is a board-certified vascular surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Rhee received his medical degree from the University of Rochester and completed his postgraduate training at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY, and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Dr. Rhee practices at the Passavant Hospital and the Shadyside office.
- Dr. Timothy Wu
Dr. Timothy Wu is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Wu received his medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. He completed his postgraduate training at Staten Island Hospital in New York and the University of Chicago. He practices at the Presbyterian and Passavant Hospitals as well as in the Shadyside office.
