Innovations in Endovascular Aneurysm Repair

In 1995 the group at the UPMC Division of Vascular Surgery was one of 15 sites in the United States to pioneer the FDA trials for the use of endovascular stent grafts in the treatment of aneurysm disease. To-date we have performed over 2,000 of these procedures and continue to be on the forefront of aneurysm technology and treatment. We now offer clinical trails for second- and third-generation thoracic and fenestrated visceral, tube, and bifurcated abdominal aortic endografts. The faculty has published extensively on this technique and has traveled internationally to lecture on these topics.

Currently we are part of ongoing trials for endovascular repairs of both thoracic and abdominal aneurysms. We are also one of the only sites in the region which will be using pressure sensors for long-term follow-up of aneurysms after endovascular treatment. We hope that this new technology will enable patients to have the less invasive endovascular treatment without the life-long requirement of CT scans for follow-up. By using pressure sensors and ultrasound we hope to make aneurysm follow-up safer and more convenient for patients.
