Liver Transplant Patients and Caregivers

Patients in need of liver transplant surgery receive care at UPMC from one of the most experienced liver transplant teams in the world. And, caregivers have access to resources to help them support their loved ones.

For patients:

  • When you are called for your transplant:
        • Do not eat or drink.
        • Remember to bring your driving map and directions to UPMC Presbyterian with you.
        • Make sure you have all of your medications.
        • Remember to pack all of your caregiver's medications.
        • Make sure you pack your cell phone and charger.
        • Report to the designated area of the hospital your coordinator specified.
        • Your emergency contact number for the Abdominal Coordinator is 412-647-5800.
  • Financial Considerations: How much of the cost of your transplant will be paid by insurance and how much will you have to pay? We'll help you find out. And, we'll work closely with your insurance case manager to coordinate your benefits.

For patients and caregivers:

  • CarePages: Create your own CarePages website to keep family members and friends up-to-date on your loved one's care. It’s free and easy to do.
  • Family House: Convenient, affordable housing for patients and their families traveling to Pittsburgh for treatment of serious illnesses.
  • International Services: Arrange for a language interpreter and other services to assist with cultural and religious needs.
  • UPMC Global Care offers a comprehensive program for patients in countries where advanced health care is not readily available.

For caregivers:

  • E-Cards: If you can’t visit your loved one in the hospital, send an e-card. Once you create and personalize your electronic greeting card, a hospital staff member will print it, in color, and deliver it to your loved one’s room, at no cost to you.
