Volumes and Outcomes — Liver Transplant

At UPMC, we’ve been performing organ transplants longer than most medical centers. To date, UPMC’s Liver Transplantation Program has performed more than 6,000 adult transplants.

Outcomes

Historically, our outcomes have been at or near national averages. As a pioneer in the field of solid-organ transplantation, our program has been consistently challenged with some of the most difficult and complex cases. Our surgeons and specialists have used this high level of complex cases to develop advancements that have resulted in new and improved treatment modalities.

To view specific information about our outcomes, including one- and three-year survival rates, please visit the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.

A note about outcomes

Many factors influence a transplant center’s survival rates, including the patient’s condition. UPMC’s Liver Transplant Program provides services to all who may benefit, including patients who are considered high-risk or unsuitable for transplant by other institutions.

Our most critically ill patients include those:

  • with acute liver failure
  • with combined thoracic conditions
  • requiring retransplantation

Despite a history of caring for patients with complex medical and surgical problems, we maintain outcomes that are at or near national benchmarks.
