Heart Transplantation Program

UPMC’s Heart Transplantation Program is one of the most recognized and experienced centers in the world. Since the program's inception in 1980, UPMC surgeons have performed more than 1,400 adult cardiac transplants. On average, UPMC specialists perform 50 or more heart transplants each year (including heart-lung procedures). UPMC has one of the few programs in the country with heart recipients now nearing or beyond 30 years post-transplant.

UPMC's Heart Transplantation Program focuses resources on clinical care as well as basic and translational clinical research in both transplantation and surgical treatment of heart failure including ventricular assist device therapy, allowing clinicians to optimize therapy and outcomes for individual patients.

In a continuing effort to improve outcomes following transplantation, UPMC faculty members remain pioneers in novel immunosuppression strategies to diminish the morbidity associated with immunosuppressive therapy. This allows them to further extend UPMC's recipient criteria, offering better outcomes to a greater number of patients in need. UPMC also continues to be the national leader in multivisceral transplants such as heart-lung, heart-liver, and heart-lung-liver, with five-year survival statistics that compare quite favorably to national benchmarks. In addition, UPMC continues to accept unusually complex cases.

Our Outcomes

At UPMC, our outcomes have met or exceeded national averages. As a pioneer in the field of solid-organ transplantation, our program has been consistently challenged with some of the most difficult and complex cases. Our surgeons and specialists have used this experience to develop advancements that have resulted in new and improved treatment modalities for our patients.
