Bariatric Surgery: Financial Considerations

The bariatric surgery staff at UPMC help patients in assessing the financial obligations associated with the surgical procedure as well as the pre- and postoperative care that is necessary. Patients are aware of their financial obligation from the beginning of the process, and UPMC staff work with them to develop a plan for payment.

Insurance Coverage

Most insurance plans cover bariatric surgery; however, there are many requirements beyond simply having a high body mass index (BMI). If you have another illness related to obesity such as  diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea, your insurance company may be willing to provide partial reimbursement for weight loss services, as well as some weight loss drug therapy.

All insurance plans are different. Check your insurance plan for the degree of coverage offered or other services that may be covered as part of your plan.
