Bariatric Surgery at ISMETT

Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Advanced Specialized Therapies

(Palermo, Italy)

Types of Surgery Available

Our Institute offers several surgical options including the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (pure restrictive procedure), the laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (pure malabsorption procedure), and the laparoscopic gastric bypass (combination procedure). Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive approach that avoids the creation of large abdominal scars. Five or six 5- to 12-mm incisions are made in the abdomen, and a camera and specific surgical tools are introduced into the abdomen to perform the procedure. The minimally invasive approach is associated with less pain and enables a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery. A bariatric surgeon is available to provide any additional information.

Life After Surgery

Weight loss surgery cannot accomplish or maintain the necessary weight loss without your cooperation. To accomplish and maintain weight loss after surgery, you must engage in a healthier lifestyle. Weight loss can improve your health condition and your quality of life. Losing weight is not always the final step. Learning how to live with a slimmer body is a significant adjustment, and it takes time. Our experts will work with you towards becoming comfortable with your new body, so that you feel confident and secure.

Continuing Support

Monthly support groups are held to exchange information between physicians, psychologists, dietitians, and patients who have already undergone bariatric surgery, and patients who are about to undergo surgery. The discussions include nutrition, physical exercise, lifestyle, and the risks and benefits of bariatric surgery. Individual information and support consults in person or by phone also are available. With a private consultation, we can tailor the program that best suits your needs. Telephone follow-up is also available.
