Bariatric Surgery: Our Approach

Our multidisciplinary approach to weight loss surgery includes ongoing assistance and support from all members of the surgical weight loss team: bariatric surgeons, registered dietitians and nutritionists, nurses, psychologists, and exercise physiologists. Patients also have access to extensive pre- and postoperative educational activities and support groups.

Step 1: Group Information/Educational Sessions
Offered at no charge several times a month, these seminars provide information on the types of weight loss surgery available, pre- and postoperative expectations, and an opportunity to meet the multidisciplinary team: surgeon, dietitian, exercise physiologist, psychologist, physician assistant, and/or bariatric nurse. If interested in pursuing surgical options, the patient can complete the initial patient assessment questionnaire and submit it for surgical review. Nonsurgical options also will be available if requested.

Step 2: Surgeon Assessment
The surgeon will review your assessment questionnaire to determine your next step. You will be contacted shortly after by the bariatric surgeon's office and will be advised of his or her recommendations on the next steps in the process.

Step 3: Six-Month Preoperative Lifestyle Support
Each patient is required to participate in a comprehensive approach to weight loss with a lifestyle team that includes a nutritionist, exercise physiologist, psychologist, and behaviorist. Special arrangements can be made with your PCP to meet the nutrition requirements if you are unable to attend this program. Financial counselors also are available to discuss insurance issues.

Step 4: Bariatric Surgeon Consult
After completing three months of lifestyle support, you will be contacted by the surgeon's office to schedule an appointment to meet your bariatric surgeon and develop an indivdualized treatment plan.

Step 5: Preoperative Appointment
When all testing and preoperative requirements have been met, you will meet with the surgeon to review the operative procedure and discuss expectations related to both the surgical procedure and postoperative follow-up care.

Step 6: Day of Surgery
The bariatric surgical team guides each patient through the surgical experience, offering support and comfort during this life-changing event.

Step 7: Immediate Postoperative Instructions (First Week)
Prior to discharge, postoperative instructions are reviewed and discussed. Each patient is prepared for the physical and emotional changes that occur after surgery.

Step 8: First-Year Follow-Up
A close follow-up during the first year after surgery, including comprehensive educational and support services, is arranged to assist patients in successful weight loss and lifestyle change.

Step 9: Long-Term Follow-Up
Our partnership lasts a lifetime. While less frequent visits occur after one year, regular follow-up with the surgeon and nonsurgical weight loss team is key to long-term weight loss success.
