Lap Band Surgery Success Story — DeAnna Brooks

DeAnna Brooks’ weight issues began in her late teens. It wasn't until later, after three children and menopause, that her weight loss efforts “seemed futile.”

DeAnna’s extra weight complicated her asthma and aggravated a knee injury.

She spent years trying “seemingly endless” weight loss options, including support groups, “countless” diets, and numerous workouts.

She finally began working with her primary care physician (PCP) in hopes of reaching her weight loss goal. However, eating less and exercising more did not equal sustained weight loss.

After losing and then regaining 50 pounds, DeAnna was at “rock bottom.”

DeAnna's Bariatric Patient Story — A Life-Altering Solution

In 2011, already committed to a healthy lifestyle and exasperated with dismal, unsustainable weight-loss results, DeAnna realized her efforts alone were inadequate.

While feeling completely dejected, her PCP told her that she was a “poster child” for weight loss surgery.

With the encouragement of both her PCP and her mother, who also was planning on having bariatric surgery, DeAnna began the approval process for lap band surgery.

Winning Her Battle

Since DeAnna’s lap band surgery:

  • She has lost 85 pounds, and continues to lose weight.
  • Her waist size has decreased eight inches and her pants size has dropped from 24 to 12.
  • Her asthma has improved, her blood pressure is lower, and she says she feels 20 years younger.

At age 46, DeAnna has not been at her current weight or worn a pair of jeans in more than 25 years. Slipping into a pair of jeans is now one of her greatest pleasures.

In addition to her surgery, DeAnna credits her weight loss success to yoga, which has been her primary workout routine since her surgery.

She's delighted to have completed a physically intensive yoga teacher training so that she can share her passion with others. After reaching her weight loss goal, yoga teacher certification is an added accomplishment.

DeAnna's Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss Tips

  • Be honest with yourself about weight loss surgery. It is a tool and does not replace hard work and good sense.
  • Keep food and exercise journals, as well as a weight loss and body measurement diary.
  • Incorporate exercise into each day. Find something you love and do it.
  • Celebrate smaller, measurable goals.
  • Change the voices in your head. Make them positive.
  • Breathe deeply. Remember: This too shall pass.
