Jessner Peel

UPMC Content 3

What Is a Jessner Peel?

A Jessner peel is a combination of resorcinol, lactic acid, and salicylic acid that can decrease oil production and help heal acne in patients with all skin types. This treatment can also help with the healing of scars, fine wrinkles, and sun damage. A Jessner peel penetrates the skin more deeply than other light peel solutions, while effectively exfoliating the outer layers of the skin, making it beneficial for patients with oily or thick skin.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

You may experience a slight burning or stinging sensation when the solution is applied, but this subsides after a few minutes.  The procedure is generally well-tolerated.

What Can I Expect After the Jessner Peel?

After the procedure, you may experience temporary redness and mild flaking as the skin exfoliates. This typically lasts three to four days.

The procedure may cause sun sensitivity, so it is important to use a daily sun block with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (SPF 30 or higher for everyday use, and SPF 50 or higher if outdoors).

Multiple treatments are needed to achieve maximum results. A series of four to six peels provides the best overall results.
