Transplant Infectious Diseases Program at UPMC

The mission of the UPMC Transplant Infectious Diseases (ID) program is to provide comprehensive care for the evaluation and management of infectious diseases related to transplantation (solid organ and stem cell), mechanical circulatory support, hematologic malignancies, and CAR-T cell therapy.

Our experts work collaboratively with the organ transplant, mechanical circulatory support and hematology teams to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. Outpatient visits for patients with hematologic malignancies and stem cell transplants occur at the Hillman Cancer Center to facilitate a multidisciplinary approach.

Transplant ID Program Services and Treatments

The UPMC Transplant ID program's expert services and treatments include:

Full assessments of solid organ and stem cell transplant candidates, focusing on infection risks and approaches to reduce or eliminate them.
Consults for infectious disease management and prevention in solid organ and stem cell transplant recipients.
Consults for infectious disease evaluation and management in potential living donors.
Treatment of infections related to mechanical circulatory support.
Treatment of infections in patients with hematologic malignancies and recipients of CAR-T cell therapy.

We provide education on preventing and treating infections to:

Our doctors have comprehensive training and expertise in transplant infectious diseases including, but not limited to:

Fungal infections, including infections caused by rare organisms
Viral infections (cytomegalovirus, respiratory, and other opportunistic viruses).
Mycobacterial and parasitic infections.
Clostridioides difficile (C diff) infections
Management of transplant recipients infected with HIV and hepatitis viruses
Treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections

Our team is involved in transplant infectious disease research on a local and national level. Our research program is focused on understanding the host-pathogen interactions in immunocompromised patients, enhancing diagnostics, improving prophylactic strategies, and improving therapies for infections. Our team is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences and has published extensively on a variety of related topics.
