Some people come to us to receive allergy shots. Others go to their family doctor.
At the UPMC Sino-Nasal and Allergy Center, we decide the safest concentration at which allergy shots should start. Only an allergist in charge of preparing your dose vial can determine the right allergy shot concentration.
The dose vial will contain a mixture of the various allergens that you are allergic to.
The value of starting at the safest allergy shot concentration often means you are able to reach a maintenance shot schedule within six months to a year. If your symptoms do not improve after starting maintenance allergy shots, we will stop allergy shots and pursue other allergy treatment options.
SLIT drops are a common allergy medication for allergy desensitization used in Europe.
You hold the allergy drops under your tongue for one minute and then swallow. The risk of an adverse reaction is less with SLIT than with allergy shots or other allergy medicine.
After we give you the first allergy treatment dose of SLIT, you can take your daily dose at home.
Please note that many insurance companies do not cover SLIT allergy medications at this time.
Because food allergies often play a role in sinus problems, our experts offer nutrition counseling.
We provide guidance on elimination challenge diets and perform skin testing for food allergies.
Allergy treatment at the Sino-Nasal Disorders and Allergy Center includes allergy treatment education about ways to decrease your exposure to allergens in the environment.
For example, if dust mites bother you, we would talk to you about the special mattress covers that relieve dust-mite problems and how often to do a hot-water wash of bedding.
