A brain injury can affect cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical function. The injuries have a variety of causes, including brain tumors, intracranial hemorrhages (bleeding that happens inside the head), motor vehicle crashes, and central nervous system infections.
Brain injuries can either be closed or open injuries.Closed injuries happen when there is no penetration of the skull, and open injuries happens when something drives through the skull and into brain tissues. A brain injury can be diffuse (spreading across the brain) or focal (limited to one space).
Types of Brain Injury
There are various types of brain injury. Some are more severe than others, and each come with different symptoms. Brain injuries can include concussions, contusions, skull fractures, anoxia and hypoxia.
