UPMC Liver Cancer Center

Types of Liver Cancer

Cancers in the liver can be broadly classified into two types:

Primary Liver Cancers

Metastatic liver cancers

The physicians and staff at the UPMC Liver Cancer Center are focused on treating all facets of liver cancer. This includes primary liver cancers, metastatic tumors to the liver, and chronic underlying liver diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis.

For primary liver tumors, we specialize in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, and gallbladder cancer. For metastatic cancer, the most common tumor in the liver is metastases from colorectal cancer. We also see a large number of patients with neuroendocrine (carcinoid) tumors.

We offer comprehensive clinical services for patients with liver tumors, which may include surgical resection, liver transplantation, regional chemotherapy, Yttrium-90 internal radiation, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and novel hormonal/gene therapies. In order to insure the well-being of the whole patient, the course of treatment includes psychological care, counseling, and a pain service.
