  • Motor control
  • Social interactions

Supporting You at Every Stage of Your Brain Injury Rehabilitation

The physiatrists at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) guide and support you and your family through the challenges of brain injury rehabilitation with a physician-directed, comprehensive, individualized treatment plan.

Most people with brain injuries need further treatment after their stay in inpatient rehabilitation. As part of UPMC's continuum of care, our doctors ensure that you receive the appropriate level of care at the right place and at the right time.

A patient's brain injury rehabilitation journey often begins at the Rehabilitation Institute. The Center for Brain Injury Rehabilitation at UPMC Mercy offers comprehensive in-patient treatment for a variety of brain injuries. The length of stay for in-patient treatment varies per injury. Your stay includes physical and occupational therapy in addition to re-learning any skills lost due to brain trauma.

Once a patient is discharged from in-patient care by their patient care team they may transition to outpatient rehabilitation at the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at a location nearest them.
