The hip joint is classified as a ball-and-socket joint, and comprises the head of the femur (the ball) and the acetabulum (the socket) of the pelvis.
 
The hip is prone to many different injuries. Hip pain may indicate arthritis, femoral acetabular impingement (FAI), labral tears, dislocation or injury to the surrounding muscles.
