Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head
Avascular necrosis can be defined as the death of bone due to a lack of sufficient blood flow. When this occurs in the hip it is commonly in the area of the femoral head (the ball of the ball-and-socket joint).
Diagnosis and Treatment
Patients will present with a dull ache or throbbing in the hip, groin, or buttock. They usually will have pain with walking, external and internal rotation of the hip, and abduction (movement of the hip to the side). X-rays and MRIs are used to determine the extent of injury. Conservative treatment will begin with physical therapy and crutches with protected weight bearing. Total hip replacement will be considered if conservative treatment is ineffective.
Prevention
Prevention includes maintaining good flexibility and strength. Proper conditioning and preparation for your activity are paramount.
