Denise Murphy, a skilled soprano in her church choir, took medicine for 12 years to suppress the growth of a small nodule on her thyroid.
But, when she started experiencing discomfort, she made an appointment at UPMC's Multidisciplinary Thyroid Center.
Although two biopsies came back negative for cancer, a genetic mutation test on her tissue samples showed she was at an increased risk for developing thyroid cancer.
Denise had surgery to remove her thyroid and, after a full recovery, she's back to harmonizing with her church choir.
