We value our relationships with our heart transplant patients’ primary care doctors and cardiologists because we recognize it takes a coordinated approach to provide optimal care, before and after surgery.

Who is a Candidate for Heart Transplantation?

  • Patients with end-stage congestive heart failure with NYHA Class IIIB-IV symptoms or intractable angina or refractory arrhythmias on optimal medical therapy, with life expectancy being less than 24 months.
  • Specific relative contraindications will be addressed on a case-by-case basis taking into consideration the patient's age and other factors.

Every patient is different and every case is unique. The selection criteria above is simply a guideline.

Refer a Patient to the UPMC Heart Transplantation Program

If you believe your patient may be a candidate for heart transplantation, it’s never too early to consult us. We can begin the intake process with very basic patient information.

After receipt of medical records and financial clearance, we will schedule the initial evaluation for your patient.

Fast-Track Referrals

The UPMC Heart Transplantation Program offers fast-track referrals, when necessary, to get patients the urgent help they need.

In many cases, we can schedule an evaluation appointment within 72 hours of insurance authorization. We also can facilitate the transfer of unstable acute heart failure patients from their current hospitals to UPMC.
