For Referring Physicians
We value our relationships with our heart transplant patients’ primary care doctors and cardiologists because we recognize it takes a coordinated approach to provide optimal care, before and after surgery.
When we communicate and collaborate, the result is better care.
Who is a Candidate for Heart Transplantation?
- Patients with end-stage congestive heart failure with NYHA Class IIIB-IV symptoms or intractable angina or refractory arrhythmias on optimal medical therapy, with life expectancy being less than 24 months.
- Specific relative contraindications will be addressed on a case-by-case basis taking into consideration the patient's age and other factors.
Every patient is different and every case is unique. The selection criteria above is simply a guideline.
If you have questions about your patient's eligibility for the UPMC Heart Transplantation Program, members of our team are available for consults 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-800-544-2500.
