Hand and Arm Transplantation
Since 2009, UPMC surgeons have performed eight hand transplants on five patients, including the nation’s first double-hand transplant and total forearm transplant.
Based on our expanding expertise in nerve regeneration research and experience in solid organ transplants, the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UPMC has embarked upon a novel clinical study on hand transplantation.
In close collaboration with the Starzl Transplantation Institute, the hand transplant study seeks to reduce the use of immunosuppressive drugs and their damaging side effects for patients.
