Visiting a Patient at Magee-Womens Hospital
of UPMC
Visiting Hours
Visiting hours are from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Visitors under the age of 13 must first check with the patient’s nurse. If you are the primary support person of one of our patients, you are allowed to spend the night in the patient’s room if needed. Please make arrangements with the patient’s nurse ahead of time.
Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC knows how important it is for family and friends to be involved in our patients’ recovery. Our family-centered care philosophy offers flexibility for visiting. In order to allow time for patients to relax, recover, and bond with their new babies, there are restrictions on the number of guests allowed in the room, and how long they can stay. We ask visitors to observe the following general guidelines, in addition to the guidelines noted for specific units:
- Visitors are permitted to enter only the area which they are visiting.
- Visitors should not visit if they have an active communicable infection, such as an upper respiratory, viral or skin infection, or infectious diarrhea.
- Children must be at least 13 years old to visit, unless they are the baby’s siblings. All children must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.
- No child who has a fever, respiratory infection, gastrointestinal infection, or diarrhea should be brought to the hospital. Children who have recently been exposed (within three weeks) to measles, mumps, chicken pox, or German measles should not visit either.
Womancare Birth Center
Guests are welcome at the Womancare Birth Center until 8:30 p.m. After 8:30 p.m., only support people will be permitted to stay. Any additional visitors are welcome to wait in the waiting room of the Emergency Department. During birth, one or two visitors may be present.
After the baby is born, the new baby's siblings are allowed to visit. However, they must be supervised by an adult at all times. Anyone who is sick or has been exposed to an infectious disease (such as chicken pox) in the past three weeks should not visit.
Postpartum Units
The baby’s father or the new mother’s primary support person may visit at any time. Other guests are welcome to visit between 11 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Children must be at least 13 years old to visit, unless they are the new baby’s siblings. All visitors must remember to wash their hands both before and after holding any infants.
Medical, Surgical, and Oncology Units
Visiting hours are from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. A support person of the patient’s choice may spend the night in the patient’s private room if needed.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Surgical Intensive
Care Unit
Visitation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) is liberal and flexible. Parents are encouraged to visit with the understanding that there are times when they may be asked to leave the room in order for tests, treatments, health assessments, and medical/nursing reports to be done without interruption. Please remember that patient care is always our first priority.
Gift Shop
Located off the main lobby, the Garden View Gift Shop carries newspapers, magazines, fresh floral arrangements, stuffed animals, and gift items for adults and babies. The shop includes a snack bar and is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Parking
Patients and visitors may park in the underground parking garage located at the main entrance off Halket Street. The garage is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pay stations are located in the hospital's Main Lobby and on the Zero Level.
