Visiting a Patient at UPMC South Side

UPMC South Side is an 181-bed, acute-care community and teaching hospital that serves the residents of Pittsburgh's south communitites. The hospital houses UPMC's Institute for Rehabilitation and Research. If you are planning to visit a patient who has been admitted to UPMC South Side, use the links below to plan your visit.

  

Visiting Hours

Visitors are welcome in the hospital at any time with the patient’s consent. To help maintain an environment of health and healing, please review the visitor guidelines before visiting any patient at UPMC South Side. 

Gift Shop

A gift and snack shop, located near the main entrance on the first floor of UPMC South Side, offers a wide selection of gift items, including fresh flowers, stuffed animals, picture frames, and more. The shop operates Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Parking 

A parking lot for visitors is located directly across the street from UPMC South Side. The fee to park in this lot is $3.50. Public metered parking also is available on residential streets near the hospital.

From the North
Take I-79 South to I-279 South (Exit 72, 2 miles south of Wexford/Route 910). Take I-279 South to Exit 6A (follow the sign that reads "I-376 Monroeville"). Merge onto Fort Pitt Boulevard. Continue on Fort Pitt Boulevard, past three traffic lights and a blinking traffic signal, to Smithfield Street. Turn right and cross the Smithfield Street Bridge to East Carson Street. Turn left onto East Carson. Follow East Carson Street to 20th Street; turn right. Follow 20th Street to Jane Street. The entrance to the parking area is on the left, just beyond Jane Street. The hospital is one block south of the parking area, on Mary Street.

From the South
Take Route 51 North to the Liberty Tunnels. Get in the right lane and proceed through the tunnel. At the traffic light just at the end of the tunnel, turn right onto P.J. McCardle Roadway. At the next traffic light, turn left onto Arlington Avenue. At the next traffic light, make a sharp right onto East Carson Street. Follow East Carson to 20th Street; turn right. Follow 20th Street to Jane Street. The entrance to the parking area is on the left, just beyond Jane Street. The hospital is one block south of the parking area, on Mary Street.

From the Southeast
Take Route 51 North to Maytide Street. Turn right onto Maytide Street; go approximately 0.5 mile. Turn left onto Biscayne Drive (follow the Blue Belt). After .25 mile, after crossing Brownsville Road, Biscayne becomes Becks Run Road. Follow Becks Run Road for 2.5 miles; turn left onto East Carson Street (Route 837). Follow East Carson to 20th Street; turn left. Follow 20th Street to Jane Street. The entrance to the parking area is on the left, just beyond Jane Street. The hospital is one block south of the the parking area, on Mary Street.

From the West (Airport Area)
Take I-279 North. Get into the right lane as you approach the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Take Exit 5B (the last exit before the tunnel) and follow signs to Route 51 South. Follow Route 51 South to the Liberty Tunnel. Turn left and proceed through the tunnel. At the traffic light just at the end of the tunnel, turn right onto P.J. McCardle Roadway. At the next traffic light, turn left onto Arlington Avenue. At the next traffic light, make a sharp right onto East Carson Street. Follow East Carson to 20th Street; turn right. The entrance to the parking area is on the left, just beyond Jane Street. The hospital is one block south of the parking area, on Mary Street.

From the East
Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 6, Pittsburgh/Monroeville. Take I-376 West to the Boulevard of the Allies by following the sign that reads "I-579/Crosstown Boulevard." Follow Boulevard of the Allies to Seneca Street; turn right. Follow Seneca Street to Forbes Avenue; turn right. Follow Forbes about one block, to the ramp for the Birmingham Bridge. Merge onto the Birmingham Bridge, remaining in the right lane as you cross. At the traffic light at the end of the bridge, turn right onto East Carson Street. Follow East Carson to 20th Street; turn left. Follow 20th Street to Jane Street. The entrance to the parking area is on the left, just beyond Jane Street.
