Workforce Readiness and Retention Programs
The UPMC Center for Engagement and Inclusion partners on programs to help job seekers define, choose, and prepare for future careers in the ever-changing health care industry.
With an emphasis on pre-employment skills and improving employee success in the workplace, our workforce readiness and retention programs target job seekers:
- With entry-level skills
- New to workforce
- Transitioning to the health care industry
Together with our workforce partners, we are developing today’s health care workforce.
Partnership on Workforce Readiness and Retention (POWRR)
The Partnership on Workforce Readiness and Retention (POWRR), a unique collaboration between UPMC and multiple community partners, has a goal of increasing workforce readiness for health care service workers.
Our community partners offer a standardized curriculum, which aligns their job training best practices with requirements for employment at UPMC.
POWRR participants complete three workshops over a six-week period:
- Understanding the Job — Gain perspective of the many careers and benefits of working in the health care industry.
- Preparing for the Job — Develop an understanding of required skills for the desired job, complete a skills assessment, and address barriers to employment by exploring options for transportation, child care, and work-life challenges.
- Getting the Job — Improve success with résumé writing support, interviewing skills, and appropriate dress consultations.
After successfully completing the three workshops, job seekers are guaranteed contact with UPMC.
The POWRR initiative is open to any job seeker who is currently working with a registered UPMC Community Partner. It's becoming a premier path to employment at UPMC.

Project SEARCH at UPMC
Project SEARCH at UPMC is a collaborative effort that:
- Offers work experience to young adults with disabilities in their last year of high school.
- Provides students in western Pennsylvania's an innovative unpaid student internship/work skills training opportunity, upon completion of all high school course work.
- Builds essential job-specific and employability skills needed to gain and maintain meaningful employment, lead productive lives, and become integrated in an adult work environment.
UPMC's Project SEARCH partners include:
- Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania
- Participating school districts
- The Office of Vocational Rehab
- Allegheny County Department of Human Services Office of Intellectual Disability
In 2011, UPMC launched a similar program for adults with disabilities.

Health Career Initiative Program for UPMC Employees
The Health Career Initiative Program (HCIP) is a UPMC and Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) program offered to UPMC employees.
HCIP encourages UPMC employees to develop professional skills and earn health care certifications through coursework completed at CCAC.
After completing 12 consecutive months of employment, employees earning a maximum wage rate of $14.50/hour (twice the minimum wage) can apply.
Unlike our tuition reimbursement program available to all wage earners, HCIP eliminates out-of-pocket expenses for participants by billing expenses for tuition and books directly to UPMC. In addition, each participant is eligible for a stipend for child care and transportation, intended to eliminate common barriers to professional development.
