Leading Technology Innovation at UPMC
UPMC Enterprises believes that the smart integration of technology within the health care industry is an opportunity to both improve the quality and lower the cost of health care.
As a leading integrated delivery and finance system (IDFS), we harness the strength of our clinical, technical, business, and capital resources to develop, test, and deploy health care products and services that improve the lives of patients across the globe and reduce costs.
Investments in technology have been a key enabler of UPMC’s success
A truly integrated health system
With more than 20 hospitals and a 2.5 million member insurance company, UPMC understands the importance of both providing care and paying for care. UPMC works to maintain the health of its insurance company members, while also caring for patients in a variety of circumstances.
Today’s best-in-class technology
UPMC has been ranked #1 in InformationWeek 500 for innovative creation and use of technology. We have been named a “Most Wired” health system for 16 consecutive years by Hospitals & Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association.
Dedicated to the future of technology
For years, UPMC has invested in a technology development division inside UPMC, focused on finding new ways to use technology to address health care’s greatest challenges, all while leveraging decades of expertise and engaging facilities as a living laboratory.
UPMC has a track record of incubating and launching successful products and companies
Entrepreneurial employees have identified and solved problems internally, and then UPMC has commercialized the solution to sell to other health care companies. Such innovative enterprises include:
- Stentor, a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) sold to Phillips
- Prodigo Solutions, which offers a supply chain solution for purchasing that is customized for the health care industry
- Evolent, a Washington, D.C.-based company helping provider systems transition to a value-based care model
Development with a partner
In order to launch an automated risk-adjustment solution for the Medicare Advantage insurer market, UPMC has successfully partnered with and invested in Health Fidelity in Palo Alto, California, to add a natural language processing capability inside the software solution. UPMC has also formed a joint venture with GE to launch Omnyx, a digital pathology company currently selling solutions to the European market and developing Next Generation Imaging platforms.
UPMC is a strategic investor and continues to invest both intellectual and financial capital into a variety of businesses which, in addition to the above-mentioned, include:
- Quest Diagnostics (laboratory services)
- Chartwell (home infusion and specialty pharmacy)
- Fresenius Medical Care and DCI Dialysis Clinic (dialysis)
- Significant investment in ImPACT (immediate post-concussion assessment and cognitive testing)
