UPMC Is Addressing the Needs of Communities and Making Them Stronger

UPMC is deeply rooted in its communities, and provides more than 3,000 established programs focused on prevention and healthy living, behavioral health, chronic disease management, and navigating resources. UPMC continues to extend its outstanding health care services to many diverse communities throughout the region.

Reducing Health Inequities in Underserved Communities

UPMC recognizes a broad range of efforts are needed to address the factors that contribute to health disparities. Across the region, UPMC is addressing economic and social barriers to health, and deploying programs and initiatives that promote health equity. Efforts include promoting employment opportunities, connecting people with resources for food and housing, offering language assistance, extending medical care to unsheltered individuals, and providing free or subsidized transportation.

Expanding Behavioral Health and Substance Use Treatment Services

UPMC continues to address behavioral health needs through a wide variety of services. Efforts include expanding access through better integration of medical and behavioral health care, as well as programs in primary, pediatric, and specialty settings. To increase awareness and to support individuals impacted by substance use disorders, UPMC is deploying innovative methods to reach rural and underserved areas, taking care directly to patients in need.

Caring for Rural Communities

UPMC is pioneering innovative care models in rural communities. For example, UPMC Kane was the first in Pennsylvania to launch a Tele-Emergency Department, in which highly trained advance practice providers (APPs) at UPMC Kane coordinate with board-certified emergency medicine physicians at UPMC Hamot. Across the system, UPMC is making significant strides to expand access to specialty care by using telehealth and adding new facilities — connecting patients to UPMC’s comprehensive health programs, and focusing efforts on the unique needs of cancer patients, children, women, and seniors.

Community Needs During Times of Crisis

While navigating the complexities of the pandemic, UPMC continued to address identified health needs by developing innovative approaches and strategies to engage with communities. UPMC temporarily suspended or modified in-person programs to promote social distancing, educated the community about the health risks of COVID-19, increased access to telehealth services, established COVID-19 testing and vaccine sites, and worked with state and local leaders to deliver COVID-19 vaccines. UPMC also reached out to patients and members in underserved areas, and continues to mobilize resources in communities where health disparities are the greatest.
