Working in tandem with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center), which comprises the academic and research activities for cancer at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC CancerCenter offers patients the latest advances in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment.
Staffed by nationally and internationally recognized cancer care specialists, UPMC CancerCenter encompasses a vast range of specialty programs for many types of cancer including 13 areas of expertise, each focusing on a specific type or treatment of cancer. Specialized treatment programs provide patients with innovative and advanced therapies based on a patient’s specific type of cancer.
In the U.S., UPMC has perfected the “hub-and-satellite” model of cancer care and services. Inpatient and specialized treatments are designed by oncology specialists at a central “hub” while outpatient care is offered at more than 40 regional sites enabling cancer patients to receive state-of-the-art care in their own communities. Further, UPMC CancerCenter is one of the largest integrated community networks of cancer physicians and health care specialists in the United States.
The American network covers more than 200 square miles of the greater Pittsburgh region, allowing highly trained medical physicists based at UPMC CancerCenter’s flagship treatment and research facility, Hillman Cancer Center, in Pittsburgh, to share information and expertise with radiation specialists at satellite centers.
The regional success of UPMC CancerCenter's hub-and-satellite model has led to international expansion of the network. Unique international partnerships have brought needed radiation oncology services to Ireland. An advanced telemedicine network links the location in Waterford to the Pittsburgh hub, affording patients in Ireland access the same level of expertise and technology available at Hillman Cancer Center. In addition, UPMC recently announced plans to collaborate with GE Healthcare to develop international oncology centers in Europe and the Middle East.
