Japan: Primary Care and Family Medicine Education

Improving Internship and Residency Programs

In an agreement with the Aso Group — a Japanese holding company — UPMC provides clinical teaching, curriculum, and faculty development to Aso-Iizuka Hospital (AIH) for the hospital’s primary care internship and family medicine residency programs.

UPMC’s relationship with AIH began in 2006 when Jeannette South-Paul, MD, chair, UPMC Family Medicine, and Michael Lamb, MD, UPMC Internal Medicine, were guest lecturers in Japan.

Today, these two UPMC faculty members continue working with AIH to assess and help improve the primary care residency program.

Helping to Design a Family Health Center

As part of the ongoing agreement, UPMC’s Department of Family Medicine also will help to design a new Family Health Center in Kaita, Japan.
