Dignity and respect are crucial to building and sustaining an environment in which everyone feels included, valued, and appreciated. Join us in our Dignity and Respect Campaign by making sure that inclusion is at the core of what you do every day.

Every day we have the opportunity to test our commitment to dignity and respect through our behaviors. The tips below (and featured in the PDF brochure and poster, as well as the video) encourage us all to be mindful of our interactions with others and to commit to treating others the way they want to be treated. By practicing a tip each day, we can all work to achieve a more inclusive community.

Here are some things you can do to support the Dignity and Respect Campaign:

  • Pick one tip each day, and follow it.
  • Print out the poster and brochure included below, and place them in a visible location.
  • Incorporate the dignity and respect tips and pledge into existing events and activities.
  • Select a tip to be a theme for a meeting or event.
  • Introduce someone new to the Dignity and Respect Campaign.
  • Add a dignity and respect footer to your e-mail messages (for example, “Inclusion begins with a core belief that everyone deserves dignity and respect,” or select one of the 30 tips).
  • When you witness acts of dignity and respect, acknowledge them.
  • Start using the phrase "dignity and respect" — and when you say it, mean it.

In November 2008, the Center for Inclusion at UPMC introduced the Dignity and Respect Campaign in an effort to promote dignity and respect in the workplace. The campaign began with the launch of a pledge, followed by employee focus groups, which were conducted to engage employees and gather their thoughts around inclusion, dignity, and respect. In response to the feedback received, we’ve created 30 Tips of Dignity and Respect, which can be practiced each day.

What started as an internal initiative at UPMC has become a national initiative inspiring dignity, respect, and inclusion across the nation. Learn more about the Dignity & Respect Campaign.
