UPMC Center for Inclusion

Community

Partnering with suppliers, as well as educational and community organizations to promote economic development in the communities where we live and work.

UPMC works with local charities, community groups, and suppliers representative of the entire community to enhance education and participation in health care services. We understand the importance of engaging educators and community groups. By training, coaching, recruiting, and retaining a talent pool for the western Pennsylvania area, we ultimately strengthen the region’s economic development efforts.

  • UPMC engages the community in a variety of ways, including hosting educational sessions on workforce issues for community agencies; having representatives serve on advisory boards such as the Business Leadership Network Advisory Council; promoting the JobLinks and School to Career programs; and providing financial support to community partners.
  • In partnership with local schools and community and workforce development organizations, UPMC works toward creating a pipeline of future talent by encouraging youth to consider curriculums that emphasize math, science, and technology. Educational partnerships begin with K-12 and include UPMC’s $100 million, ten-year commitment to The Pittsburgh Promise, which provides scholarship support for graduates of the Pittsburgh Public School System.
  • Braddock’s Steps to Exploration of Professions Project was developed for students ages 6-18. The program is designed to help children (ages 6-8) become more aware of their bodies, environment, and fundamental principles of decision making; inform children (ages 9-10) of various health care fields and careers; introduce children (ages 11-13) to career opportunities and hands-on experience within a hospital environment; and assist individuals (ages 14-18) in becoming better prepared for the workforce, while encouraging them to take advantage of opportunities to give back to their communities.
  • Community events and activities sponsored by UPMC promote healthy lifestyles and community participation. From arthritis to weight loss, stress management to first aid, UPMC hosts educational events for the general public year-round.
  • As part of UPMC’s commitment to the community, UPMC strives for diversity in its preferred pool of product and service vendors. In Fiscal Year 2008, UPMC’s participation in the minority- and women-owned business initiative resulted in approximately $92 million being placed back in the community. Learn more about UPMC's Supplier Diversity Program.
