We are focused on ensuring that our patients have access to quality health care and information that encourages healthy lifestyles.
A healthy life requires a healthy lifestyle, which includes good eating habits and exercise as well as access to quality health care services and information. UPMC provides a range of services to people within our service area, ensuring that access to care is not limited by economic circumstance, lack of knowledge, or proximity to care.
- UPMC’s financial assistance program supports those in difficult economic circumstances and provides them with health care regardless of their ability to pay.
- UPMC’s pastoral care programs provide spiritual support to patients, families, and staff, regardless of faith, tradition, or denomination. Review the services provided at each hospital for more information.
- UPMC Health Plan holds a variety of health fairs and organizes special outreach programs to bring diagnostic and clinical care directly to neighborhoods where people most at risk can easily access services.
- The Disabilities Resource Center (DRC) supports customer service for patients and guests with disabilities. The center provides an educational module for staff that addresses the cultural and legal issues related to people with disabilities. This training is part of our goal of raising awareness about the largest minority population in Western Pennsylvania.
The DRC seeks to remove barriers within UPMC facilities by identifying opportunities, posting universal signage, providing detailed information regarding accommodations, and implementing processes to ensure equal access for people with disabilities.
If you have questions or would like to share comments or suggestions on how to provide barrier-free access for the community, contact Susan Schaeffer, PhD, director, Disabilities Resource Center at 412-605-1483.
- University of Pittsburgh Institute of Aging (UPIA), in partnership with UPMC, provides access to a multidisciplinary network of comprehensive clinical care, maintains one of the largest and most diverse portfolios of aging-related research in the nation, and runs one of the most extensive geriatric and gerontologic education programs in the country. UPIA also acts as a referral resource, connecting users with information on aging-related topics, educational programs, research studies, and services. The website offers a broad array of information that has been categorized by audience into five main sites: older adults, family and caregivers, professionals in aging, researchers, and educators and students.
