Workforce Development Initiative

In 2009, the UPMC Center for Inclusion launched the Workforce Development Initiative and the Partnership Council to collectively address community workforce needs throughout western Pennsylvania.

We share the goals of:

• Raising awareness about health careers at all age levels
• Exploring the impact of health care industry trends on workforce needs
• Improving community members' employability in health care
• Sharing community partner best practices
• Creating equitable access for community partners to opportunities at UPMC

Focus on Health Career Awareness and Workforce Readiness

With our community partners, we're creating a pipeline of workforce-ready job seekers to meet the region's health care workforce needs. Our two areas of focus include:

• Health Career Awareness: Grades K-12
  • Smart Futures PA e-Mentoring
  • AIU Nursing and Health Care Apprenticeship Program
  • Career Link OPDC School 2 Career (S2C) Program
  • Pittsburgh Public Schools Health Sciences Program
  • Health Exploration Series for Grades K-12
• Workforce Readiness and Retention Programs
• Health Career Initiative Program (HCIP)
• Partnership on Workforce Readiness and Retention (POWRR)
• Project SEARCH at UPMC
• Youth Adult Employment Program (YAEP)

Today, UPMC collaborates with more than 100 organizations throughout western Pennsylvania, including K-12 schools, community colleges, vocational-technical schools, community organizations, and government agencies. Through its collaboration with The Partnership Council, a consortium of Greater Pittsburgh organizations, UPMC displays its commitment to inclusion, dignity, and respect.
