What is a Form 990?
Form 990 is an annual informational filing required by the Internal Revenue Service for certain organizations that are exempt from federal income taxes because they pursue charitable, educational, or religious purposes.
Form 990 provides the public with an understanding of a tax-exempt organization’s mission; details of its financial condition, including sources of income and a breakdown of expenses; the compensation of its key employees, and other relevant information.
Background on UPMC's Form 990 filings for FY2008
As part of our commitment to organizational transparency, UPMC again has filed a group, or consolidated, Form 990 for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2008, which includes the majority of our tax-exempt entities. In addition, we have submitted a separate return for the parent organization. This approach is designed to improve the public’s understanding of UPMC’s operations and the relationship among our various entities. Under the guidance of the UPMC Board of Directors and the leadership of President and CEO Jeffrey A. Romoff and his executive team, UPMC has grown to an $8 billion integrated global health enterprise with 50,000 employees, 20 hospitals, 400 outpatient sites and doctors’ offices, a nearly 1.4-million-member health insurance division, and commercial and international ventures.
On a typical day, more than 2,700 people are cared for as patients in UPMC hospitals; more than 1,200 use the emergency departments; 12,000 are treated at outpatient clinics and facilities; and 1,400 receive services in their homes through UPMC’s home health programs.
Last year, UPMC contributed to the good health of the region by providing uncompensated care, support for research and education, community services and charitable contributions valued at more than $518 million, or 13 percent of net patient revenue. UPMC also serves as a unique catalyst for transforming the economy of western Pennsylvania into one based on medicine, research, education and technology.
