Welcome
On behalf of UPMC, it is our pleasure to invite you to the 2008 Dr. Loren Roth UPMC Quality and Patient Safety Symposium, to be held Friday, Sept. 26, at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport. We have renamed our quality symposium to honor Loren Roth, MD, MPH, UPMC’s former senior vice president for Quality Care and chief medical officer. Dr. Roth has been a driving force behind quality improvement efforts at UPMC, as well as a key supporter of this symposium. It is fitting that we celebrate Dr. Roth’s legacy each year when we gather to address our quality care initiatives.
Our theme for this year’s symposium is “An Extraordinary Experience Every Time.” From the patient’s perspective, quality health care means more than simply clinical best practices. Everything about the patient’s experience, from the first encounter with our staff at admission to the way his or her family members are treated, must be extraordinary. And this high level of quality must be provided to every patient, every time; there can be no exceptions. Our team of experts today will explore these concepts through lectures, learning laboratories, and poster presentations, providing a well-rounded view of the essentials of an extraordinary patient experience.
We are pleased to welcome our friend and colleague, Alan Green, as the symposium’s keynote speaker. Mr. Green formerly served as senior vice president for administration and operations of the UPMC Physician Services Division, which employs thousands of doctors in academic faculty, community-based, and emergency department physician practices. He devoted his career to the management of sophisticated health care operations in both hospital and physician office settings. Recently Mr. Green spent significant time as a UPMC hospital patient himself, giving him first-hand knowledge of the patient’s perspective. He is eager to share his unique insights on the challenges of delivering extraordinary patient experiences in today’s complex, demanding health care environment.
As UPMC builds the hospital of the future, we are committed to ensuring that the right patient gets the right care, at the right time, in the right way, every time. We applaud the efforts of UPMC professionals to continue to enhance the experience of our patients by creating new and improved ways to deliver services of the highest quality, at every stage of every patient’s relationship with us. We look forward to seeing you at the symposium.
