UPMC conducts a background check on each final candidate for employment. These background checks include a criminal record check. If the results of the background check conflict with your answers on the application, and you are not able to provide a compelling explanation (in the sole judgment of UPMC) for the discrepancy, the offer of employment will be withdrawn.
Please see some responses below for advice regarding the legal questions:
Question 4: In this question, we are asking about whether or not you have a criminal record. Having a criminal record does not necessarily disqualify you from employment with UPMC. If you are a final candidate for a position with UPMC, a background check will be performed which will include a criminal record check. If we discover that you have not been truthful in answering this question, our offer of employment will be retracted (or, if you have already begun working, your employment will be terminated).
Question 5: ARD (Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition) and PWV (Probation Without Verdict) are programs that the courts sometimes use for first-time offenders. If you fulfill certain requirements, the charges against you are dropped, and you are eligible to have your record expunged. This does not disqualify you for a job at UPMC. We ask about this because, when a criminal background check is done, charges will often appear on your record without information about how they were resolved. It is not unusual for an applicant, who thinks that his or her record has been expunged, to answer this question incorrectly and then be disappointed to learn that the charges were discovered during the background check. If we know that you had an ARD or PWV, this can be quickly verified, and you may begin work sooner. If we discover that you have not been truthful in answering this question, you will no longer be in consideration for the employment opportunity. Therefore, if you have been through ARD or PWV, you should answer this question with a yes, even if you think your record has been expunged, because if you are not honest in answering this question, any offer of employment will be withdrawn (or, if you have already begun working, you will be terminated).
