Hospital Administrative Fellowship Track
The two-year hospital fellowship provides exposure to all aspects of hospital operations and management. It's ideal for those who wish to pursue a career in hospital administration.
Year I: Core Functional Rotations — Hospital Fellowship
All hospital fellows spend their first year rotating with the executive team at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, consistently ranked among America's best hospitals by U.S. News and World Report.
UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside is the flagship hospital of UPMC, and serves as the centralized hub for a wide array of advanced tertiary and community care services. UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside operates on two campuses located approximately two miles apart — known respectively as the “Oakland Campus” and the “Shadyside Campus.” Each of these campuses maintains a distinct personality and purpose within the UPMC organization, and serves a vital role in the communities it serves.
Throughout rotations, fellows will gain structured experience in the areas of Revenue Cycle, Budgeting, and Finance.

Leading hospital operations with the president of UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside serving as the preceptor. Includes projects in the areas of:
- Transplant
- Pre-hospital services
- Trauma services
- Care management
- Quality
- Physician relations

| Nursing |
The many facets of nursing operations and administration, including:
- Capacity management and patient throughput
- Performance and productivity
- Strategic initiatives focused on quality and patient satisfaction to impact value-based purchasing
- Developing new care delivery models to support an accountable organization and healthcare reform

| Physician Practice Management |
Important aspects of physician practice management within the UPMC Physician Services Division, such as:
- Physician management
- Physician contracting
- Medical research
- Hospital and physician practice coordination of services

| Support Services Administration |
Projects that address the current needs of support services administration in key support services areas, such as:
- Facilities planning
- Housekeeping
- Maintenance
- Construction
- Dietary services

Project Examples
Examples of projects, roles, etc. that hospital fellows may work on include:
- Conducting process and workflow improvement studies
- Coordinating various task forces
- Serving a variety of analytical roles
- Establishing new clinics
- Assisting with the implementation quality-of-care improvement initiatives
- Assisting with the integration of clinical departments across campuses
- Exposure to financial analyses
- Championing various projects with senior leadership

The second year of the hospital fellowship allows more flexibility in satisfying career objectives.
Based on the organization’s needs, fellows may have opportunities in the following:
- Extended or additional rotations
- Planning and marketing
- Information systems
- Health information management
- Human resources
- UPMC Health Plan/managed care
- International and Commercial Services Division
- Project work as assigned by the chief executive officer, chief operations officer, or other members of senior management
- Department management

Each fellow is also assigned a preceptor during each rotation. Preceptors are responsible for guidance and progress by:
- Defining projects
- Ensuring that fellows' needs are being met
- Meeting with fellows regularly
- Providing timely feedback regarding performance and progress

Fellows are responsible for providing their advisors and preceptors with all necessary information to ensure a mutually beneficial experience.
