UPMC nurses have the opportunity to practice and work at a wide range of facilities, including community hospitals, tertiary hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health care, and assisted-living and skilled nursing facilities. Nurses at UPMC’s hospitals and facilities make a difference in patient lives every hour of every day.

There are 20 hospitals within UPMC. Nurses work with patients from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, conditions, and needs. Specialty and nursing opportunities include oncology, pediatrics, transplantation, medical-surgical, cardiology, trauma and burn, obstetrics, intensive care, research, and rehabilitation.

UPMC also offers outreach and commercial settings for nursing practice. Opportunities are available for nurses to apply their knowledge and experience to make a difference in the health of our patients through our outreach and community settings. Our nurses rely on their clinical knowledge to improve the health of patients.

UPMC’s scope isn’t limited to western Pennsylvania. An array of international opportunities are available at facilities in Qatar, Ireland, and Italy.

UPMC interviewing and hiring 

Information about the interviewing and hiring process for nurses is below. This is general information that applies to most UPMC facilities. To view additional interviewing and hiring procedures specific to certain facilities, click on the facility of your choice in the left column.

Before your interview

Discuss the online application process with your recruiter. You may apply online at www.upmc.com/careers.

After accepting an offer

  • Once you have accepted an offer, you will work with your recruiter or Human Resources representative to select a start date.
  • You will receive an offer letter confirming your position. It also will include information regarding your pre-employment physical and the documentation you are required to bring on your first day. We are required to photocopy documents for your files to confirm that you are eligible for employment within the United States. The documents you may bring are included in your offer letter. Among the documents you may provide are a driver’s license or passport and a social security card or birth certificate. Refer to your offer letter for complete instructions.
  • You must complete and pass your physical prior to beginning orientation. Your recruiter or Human Resources representative will help you to schedule this appointment. Plan for at least one hour. Bring your photo ID and any immunization records, measles/mumps/rubella and hepatitis B titers that you may have, as well as your most recent TB test if you have it. If you need to have a TB test done at the time of your physical, you will need to return in 48 to 72 hours to have it read. Ask if you will need to fast prior to your appointment.
  • Graduate nurses:
        • You must have your practice permit (or license) to begin orientation. If you have not received your practice permit prior to orientation, you must contact your recruiter prior to your first orientation day.
        • We require our graduate nurses to take their NCLEX exam within the first four months of work. Discuss this with your recruiter and/or unit director.
