Physician Services Division (PSD) Administrative Fellowship Track

The two-year PSD fellowship provides exposure to all aspects of physician practice management. It's ideal for those who wish to pursue a career in physician practice management or academic medical management.


Year I: Core Functional Rotations — Physician Services Division (PSD) Fellowship

Rotation: Exposes Fellows To:
Academic and Research Administration

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and key components of a variety of topics, including:

  • graduate school teaching/training
  • medical school teaching/training
  • research administration
  • residency programs and clinical fellowship training
  • space planning
  • other areas of interest, as appropriate

Clinical Operations,
Physician Practice Management, and
Patient Care Services Administration

Key components in academic and community physician practice settings, such as:

  • clinical staffing and scheduling
  • inpatient and outpatient settings
  • patient care initiatives
  • patient care process improvement
  • regulatory and compliance issues
  • workflow issues
  • other areas of interest, as appropriate
Finance

Various financial and revenue cycle initiatives, such as:

  • billing
  • budgetary development and variance reconciliation
  • business plan development
  • coding
  • collections
  • financial modeling/forecasting
  • registration
  • other areas of interest, as appropriate
Support Services Administration

Key components of a variety of support services management, including:

  • compensation, payroll, and incentive plans
  • electronic medical records
  • facilities planning
  • human resources
  • marketing, planning, and development
  • physician recruitment
  • physician relations
  • purchasing
  • other areas of interest, as appropriate

Project Examples

Examples of projects that PSD fellows may work on include:

  • coordinating various task forces
  • creating financial dashboards and budgets
  • establishing new physician practices
  • implementing quality-of-care improvement initiatives
  • participating in physician practice acquisitions and divestitures
  • performing financial analyses
  • refreshing patient access and patient satisfaction initiatives

Year II: Flexible Year — Physician Services Division (PSD) Fellowship

The second year of the PSD fellowship allows more flexibility in satisfying career objectives.

Based on the organization’s needs, fellows may have opportunities in the following:

  • extended or additional rotations
    • compliance/regulatory
    • finance/revenue cycle
    • human resources
    • legal
    • PSD information systems
    • PSD support services
    • other business units of the system (e.g. hospitals, health plan)

  • project work as assigned by a PSD administrator — such as the executive vice president of administration and operations — or other members of PSD senior management

  • department management

Roles and Expectations — Physician Services Division (PSD) Fellowship

Each PSD fellow is assigned an advisor who serves as a mentor and an advocate throughout the entire fellowship.

Each fellow is also assigned a preceptor during each rotation. Preceptors are responsible for guidance and progress by:

  • defining projects
  • ensuring that fellows' needs are being met
  • meeting with fellows regularly
  • providing timely feedback regarding performance and progress

Fellows are responsible for providing their advisors and preceptors with all necessary information to ensure a mutually beneficial experience.

  • The PSD fellowship track will only accept applications from those who have completed the PSD Summer Residency Program.
