Program Goals

The UPMC Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Surgical Residency Program is dedicated to advancing UPMC as the premier educational setting for producing excellence in patient care delivery through an innovative and world-class clinical curriculum specifically tailored to prepare the physician assistant and nurse practitioner to practice in an evolving and increasingly complex health care market.

The goal of our program is to recruit high-quality, motivated advanced practice providers and provide them world-class training in surgery and its subspecialties based on current scientific knowledge of the field.

We further aim to provide a unique surgical learning experience tailored to the advanced practice provider's interests and goals and to develop efficient, knowledgeable and confident providers capable of effective patient management within his/her scope of practice.


Didactic Portion- Fundamentals of Surgery

Our program is a one year commitment that includes an online lecture series as well as in person hands on lab training featuring:

  • Laparoscopic Training Lab
  • Suturing and Knot Tying
  • Line Insertion Course
  • Lectures covering all aspects peri-operative care of the surgical patient given by experts in a multi-disciplinary approach

Clinical Portion — Rotations through Surgical Subspecialties

The clinical portion will consist of rotations in various UPMC facilities and units, working as a staff PA/NP fully licensed and credentialed on the following services:

  • Trauma/Acute Care Surgery*
  • Surgical ICU*
  • Vascular*
  • Cardiac*
  • Thoracic
  • Plastics
  • Bariatric and Minimally Invasive General Surgery
  • Orthopaedics

*Clinical rotations offered to the Cardiac Surgery Surgical Residency Program.
