UPMC's APP Neonatology Fellowship Program curriculum includes didactic and clinical portions.
The curriculum covers an overview of neonatology through didactic lectures as well as hands-on learning through clinical rotations. The fellowship will run for a full calendar year starting with 2-3 weeks of didactic education during orientation to build a foundation in neonatal physiology and pathophysiology. Throughout the program, weekly education will be structured within focused units encompassing neonatal care given by a broad faculty from the medical team, including neonatologists, subspecialists, and Advanced Practice Providers.
This didactic education will include lectures, problem-based learning, procedural simulation, observational experiences, and competency assessments. These rotations are designed to give the fellow a comprehensive experience in neonatal medicine. The APP fellow will have ongoing learning opportunities during their clinical rotations within UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine conferences including Morbidity and Mortality, Journal Club, NICU subspecialty clinical conferences and much more.
The APP fellow will also attend the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Boot Camp. This month-long immersion into general pediatrics helps the APP fellow to gain exposure to common pediatrics diagnoses and patient populations and provides a solid foundation for further subspecialty training. The APP fellow will gain experience and familiarity with being an integral part of a hospital wide infrastructure.
