For more than 10 years, Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT) has been providing transplantation and other specialized therapies in Palermo, Italy. This partnership between UPMC and the Region of Sicily has been one of the most advanced and most successful international ventures undertaken by a U.S. academic medical center.
UPMC brought transplantation services to an area in the Mediterranean basin that previously did not have wide access to such procedures and therapies. Since 1996, more than 700 transplants have been performed at ISMETT with outstanding clinical results. ISMETT’s one-year survival rate for liver transplant recipients is the highest in Italy.
UPMC manages and operates ISMETT, a 120,000 square-foot facility. The facility includes a 14-bed comprehensive Intensive Care Unit and a state-of-the-art imaging center. ISMETT has become one of the leading transplant centers in Europe and is a major referral center for other Mediterranean countries. ISMETT provides each patient with the highest quality of care, which is supported by personalized services designed to accommodate the international patient’s cultural and linguistic needs.
