How Are Fibroids Diagnosed?
Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC offers a variety of diagnostic tests for the evaluation of uterine fibroids.
Procedures such a gynecologic examination, pelvic ultrasound, hysterosonography, hysteroscopy or magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] can be performed to determine the presence, size, and location of uterine fibroids.
Diagnostic testing provides information needed to decide on appropriate treatment options, and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
An enlarged uterus and fibroids may be confirmed during a clinical pelvic exam, but some myomas that cause symptoms may go undetected during the pelvic examination. A pelvic ultrasound
is frequently performed to confirm and identify abnormalities. Additional information can also be obtained during a pelvic ultrasound by filling the uterus with fluid. This procedure is called or sonohysterogram or saline enhanced sonography.
Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows the doctor to look directly inside the uterus and see fibroids located in the uterine cavity. With hysteroscopy, a slender instrument called a hysteroscope, is inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
Sometimes, especially with very large fibroids, more testing is necessary. MRI
(magnetic resonance imaging) can provide enhanced images of the uterus, showing the location of the fibroids and surrounding organs.
