Nutrition Counseling and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)

Many people struggle with eating a balanced diet, whether they are managing a specific disease, trying to lose weight, or just want to feel better overall. Let our registered dietitians help you achieve your nutrition goals. We have classes for families as well as one-on-one appointments. Please check with your insurance provider regarding coverage. Physician diagnosis is required to bill insurance.

Adult medical nutrition therapy is for anyone 18 years old or older. Our registered dietitians will meet with patients to assess their needs, develop meal plans, and provide support. Some of the most common diagnoses include:

  • obesity and morbid obesity
  • hyperlipidemia
  • high blood pressure
  • gastroparesis
  • chronic kidney disease (CKD)

Individuals with diabetes are referred to the Diabetes Institute at UPMC Hamot to meet with a certified diabetes educator/registered dietitian.

Pediatric medical nutrition therapy is available for children ranging from infants through age 18. Our certified pediatric dietitian works with patients who are underweight, overweight, have specific dietary restrictions, picky eaters, failure to thrive, or eating disorders.

The child must be present in order to bill the insurance for the session.

Healthy Eating for Families

This class is for the whole family to meet with our registered dietitian. You will discuss current eating habits, discover opportunities for improvement, and together, develop a meal plan that will help everyone in the family be a part of healthy decisions in the kitchen.

This program is not billed to insurance. There is a fee for the initial one-hour appointment as well as any half-hour follow-up appointments.

The class can be scheduled at the convenience of the family and the registered dietitian. Payment is due upon registration.
