A hospitalist is a doctor whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Patients under the care of a hospitalist typically have shorter hospital stays.

UPMC Hamot's hospitalists are all trained in either internal or family medicine and are responsible for:

Coordinating care of hospitalized adults from the time they are admitted to the time they leave the hospital.
Providing around-the-clock inpatient care.
Responding quickly in case of emergencies or changes in a patient’s condition.
Working directly with a highly-skilled team of physician assistants and nurse practitioners who also care for patients in the hospital.
Keeping primary care physicians updated on the health status of hospitalized patients.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hospitalists

Who will take care of me after I go home from the hospital?

Hospitalists only care for patients while they are in the hospital. Upon discharge, your medical records will be available to your primary care physician (PCP) to aid in the continuum of care.

Your PCP can:

Handle any follow-up care.
Write prescription refills.
Answer any questions you may have.

What if my insurance doesn't cover a new prescription that the hospitalist wrote?

Who should I call if I need a refill of the prescription I got from a hospitalist?

Please contact your PCP about refills. He or she will know if that medication is still appropriate for you.

If I need my test results from my hospital stay — or need someone to complete paperwork for the
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), disability insurance, AFLAC, or other — who should I contact?

Contact your PCP's office for anything you need after discharge. He or she will have all the records from your hospital stay and can complete any paperwork you need.
