A hospitalist is a doctor whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Patients under the care of a hospitalist typically have shorter hospital stays.

UPMC Hamot's hospitalists are all trained in either internal or family medicine and are responsible for:

  • Coordinating care of hospitalized adults from the time they are admitted to the time they leave the hospital.
  • Providing around-the-clock inpatient care.
  • Responding quickly in case of emergencies or changes in a patient’s condition.
  • Working directly with a highly-skilled team of physician assistants and nurse practitioners who also care for patients in the hospital.
  • Keeping primary care physicians updated on the health status of hospitalized patients.
